Disciples & Servants.3

"A king who plans to wage war must first consult his military advisors to determine whether his army of ten thousand is capable of defeating the enemy's force of thirty thousand. If his advisors can find no hope of victory, he must send forth his ambassadors to meet the enemy, and negotiate peace before the battle begins."

--Jesus

"Is God bound to forgive sin -OR- to destroy sin?"

Make no mistake, He will have us free!  Free from the pestilence of pettiness, pride, pretension, poverty of soul,  powers, impurity, and imperfection.

I have a friend in one of our state's prisons.  It wasn't until about two years ago I found out he was there, for I had not heard anything from him since high school nearly forty years ago.  It was through Facebook I reconnected with his sister who told me some of the details of his troubled life.  More troubling was that he refused to acknowledge the evil that had brought him to the point where he sat exiled from family and friends.

Shortly after making that connection we set up a prayer group on Facebook so that devoted followers of Jesus from all around the country could pray for Gary at an appointed time each week.  He had cut himself off from his family for years never acknowledging nor answering attempts to contact him.

Here is a description of Gary:

He is Everyman who, left for dead by society, yields to the gentle wind of the Breath of Life blowing the dying ember of his humanity into a flame.

He is Legion who, plagued by forces willing his destruction, isolating him from humanity, and defying attempts to retrain or restrain him, finds true freedom in the Fearless Lord of Love.

He is Youth thrown into the hellish flames of ignorance, indifference, neglect, prejudice or abuse looking through the darkened eyes of fear into the understanding eyes of Light.

He is the Least of the Brethren sitting naked, hungry and in prison waiting for one of the Master's kind to visit, clothe and feed his needy soul.

That is Gary. He is all the Gary's of the world. That is why we pray. That is why we obey. That is why we love.

We, followers of Jesus, are the company of those whose work is to send sin out of the world, first, by sending it out of ourselves, by being done with it.  An army of the King arrayed against the destruction wrought by sin and self-will.

He will have every soul free!

For two years we prayed.  Today Gary is enjoying a new found freedom in repentance, in surrendering to the King of Hearts!

Health and healing for body and soul.4

"While counting his flock of one hundred sheep, a shepherd discovered one missing. Immediately, he left the ninety-nine in the safety of the fold, and went in search of the one that was lost. And when the lost sheep was found, he carried it home in his arms, his heart filled with gladness. On the way, he called out to his friends and anyone who would listen, “Rejoice with me! This, my lost sheep, has been found.”
I tell you this truth: there is more rejoicing in heaven over one who repents, than over ninety-nine who need no repentance."
-- Jesus

Occasionally a guy has the joy of coming across another follower of Jesus who just lives close to the heart of God. Jim Wright is one of those guys. I've not met Jim personally; a mutual friend "posted" on her facebook wall that they'd had dinner with Jim recently and "linked" to his blog. (Yes the Holy Spirit does do technology!) The first entry I read instantly resonated in my heart that Jim just gets it (read for yourself: http://crossroadjunction.com/2009/03/30/sufficient-grace/) -- that faith is obedience, and obedience to Christ is the link between God's heart and man's.

Every act of obedience necessarily begins with repentance: a change of mind & will. Repentance leading to active obedience generates great power in the joy of heaven. Listen with your heart to the joy of heaven in this account from Jim's journal on ministering among inmates:
"I’ve been mentoring and building relationships with a group of thirty or so men in the jail, as we periodically meet to discuss the things of God. Some are believers, and some are believers in the making. This morning, as I was pulling out of my driveway to meet with some guys in the jail, I felt the Lord say it was time to plant a church among them. This sense that it was time to plant a new church among them did not strike me as the least bit odd. I am part of a fellowship that has planted various sister churches that are thriving in other housing units in the local jail, as well as in other improbable places. So the sole issue for me was simply being receptive to the Lord’s timing, by acting only when and how He says.

This morning I set aside my plans as the men and I talked about Jesus being in us, so that Jesus becomes manifest among us, and thus Jesus becomes expressed through us.

We talked about how this is the foundation for authentic church.
We then talked about Ephesians 4 and how each individual has particular gifts that the rest of us need, and how together we are different but integrated parts of the whole Body of Christ.
I joked with them about how I am the asshole of the Body of Christ, because He often uses me to get the crap out of people’s lives. They laughed, but also understood that they too had something unique to offer and that unless we all participate in each other’s lives by ministering one to another – as we share the life of Jesus in us with each other – we have little hope of finding health and wholeness.
We also looked at 1 Corinthians 14 and how Paul commanded that when we gather together we each are to have something to contribute, rather than expecting to always receive. Thus, church meetings are active and participatory.
Finally, we talked about how Jesus is present when two or three gather in His name, and how God often meets us and our needs through each other.
The great thing about planting churches in the jail is that the men aren’t saddled with all kinds of religious “stuff” to unlearn. They “get it” right away.

Individuals of Peace and Hospitality

Towards the end of our time together, I told them it was time to start being the church in their unit. I then asked who, among them, were men of peace – the social glue, so to speak, of their housing unit.
They quickly identified several men, who seemed embarrassed – which was good because there were no ego agendas among them. I asked those guys to come forward and stand around me. Then, following Jesus’ instructions in Luke 10, I explained to all of them that I was going to bless those men of peace, because Jesus wanted to use their gift of hospitality to pull them all together each evening for fellowship.
You see, God gives some the special gift of hospitality and peace, and we see in Luke 10 that those attributes are vital for bringing forth a church in a new community.
So, following the example of Luke 10, I asked those several men of peace to identify some issue in their lives or circumstances where they needed the Lord’s blessing. When they did so, I held hands with them and prayed a blessing over them as I asked the Lord to meet those needs.
Now here’s the neat part about planting churches, which I have seen time and again. This week, the Lord is going to answer those prayers and bless those men. And when He does, they in their excitement will become catalysts for attracting others into fellowship. And from that, a new church will merge.
In fact, I expect to see that new church in operation when I return next week, and I will then join them on occasion to simply encourage Jesus in them, among them, and now through them.

Trust and Obey

I’m not so sure why we make this so complicated.
Maybe it’s because we don’t trust that Jesus knew what He was doing when He instructed His disciples in Luke 10 on how to usher the Kingdom of God into new communities.
Maybe it’s because we don’t trust that God will bless those individuals of peace in that community, and then use them to attract others into His Kingdom.
Maybe it’s because we think it’s all up to us.
But nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, my role is very limited: I am to bless those whom God has pre-positioned as catalysts of peace and hospitality, gently encourage the emerging believers, and then get out of the way so they can come forth, minister one to another, and participate together in the joy of knowing Jesus.
Once that foundation is laid, the rest just sort of naturally follows.

An update (April 6, 2012)

I was unable to return to that housing unit until a month later. When I did, I was swamped by guys telling me how Jesus was doing amazing things among them as they met together. Their enthusiasm was contagious!
It’s now three months later, and that church is truly indigenous and going strong, just like I knew it would.
I estimate that in just the last three months alone, we’ve seen around 50 men receive Jesus through the indigenous churches we’ve planted in our local jail – and the spiritual maturity they are finding and reproducing among each other is astounding.
We are seeing the same results in the homeless community and in other segments of our county as we go and offer to help be the church with you and your friends, rather than invite you to come and attend church with me and my friends.
What a radical concept!
For more information on how Jesus taught His disciples – and us – to plant churches, see my blog on Participatory Church.
Another Update (May 9, 2012)

That one church plant has now blossomed into at least seven additional fellowships in the jail, in addition to the others already existing there. I believe there are more, as men go to other units and facilities, so those seven are just the one’s I personally know and have met with.
What is really neat about these new fellowships is that they all arose at the initiative of the inmates themselves. Furthermore, they are populated with primarily new believers.
Life reproducing life, just like we see in the New Testament."
Can you hear the joy?

A New Year An Old Tip

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
--Jesus

illustration from a Pandora radio ad...

1 Weird Tip

I was sitting amongst a group of people waiting to get into the visitor's room at a state correctional facility. A chatty man next to me -looking for anyone who would listen- began telling me his story. He said he was just there taking his girlfriend to visit her son, but he couldn't go into see him because as a former felon he wasn't allowed in.

Of course I had to ask what he'd done to wind up as a former felon. He described in detail his craft: writing bad checks for jewelry, hotel rooms, cars; purchasing the bad check "kits" he used in his deception and the outrageous amount of money he'd stolen--nearly $200,000 dollars! He was explaining how he'd made it through ten years of parole and didn't pay back a dime.

I asked him if he was still writing bad checks. "Of course not," he chortled, "I'm too old for that." So I asked him if he stopped because he got caught or because he really thought it was wrong. Honestly, I don't think he felt robbing banks was all that noxious, "I never cheated any person," he assured me...

Its a new year. By now we've probably packed away last year's Christmas decorations and perhaps, without much fanfare, are already packing in our "new" New Year's resolutions, too. We kind of take it for granted that somewhere deep inside of us there is a desire to get better. As human beings we are capable of more than mere existence; we are blessed with a "homing" device that draws us to the higher, deeper, better. In a word: the Divine!

So let me invite you to go a little "deeper" this year. Let me give you "1 Weird Old Tip": learn the meaning of "repentance" and practice that instead of "resolutions." The idea of making resolutions gives hope for change; but too often we focus on the surface issues, like I need to lose fifteen pounds. But the real issue may be discontent or unresolved anger. Or I need to stop smoking when the real issue is who or what is mastering me? Or I just need to be a happier person when the real issue is who am I trying to please?

Question: Why do our attempts at resolving our chronic problems usually meet with defeat or frustration?
Answer: By not knowing or understanding the root problems that produce bad behavior we never make real progress.

We just celebrated anew the birth of the Savior of the world, Jesus. He came to save us from our sins--the very root problems that produce the very real discomfort, corruption, & destruction we deal with in ourselves and others daily.

His message is still the same:
"Repent, for the Kingdom of God is near."

Our repentance--a clearing away of the bad that abides in us--opens the door that the King may dwell in our hearts. At the very least, begin to quarrel with the bad and do the good thing that is right at the door of your conscience, that you may fearlessly claim the help of Him who loved you into being and longs to make you free!
Here's to real resolution!
Here's to repentance!
Here's to freedom!
Happy New Year!

On a Fruitful Life.2

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt has lost its power to purify, flavour and preserve, how can it be made salt again? It is worthless, except to be discarded and trampled under foot." -- Jesus

For those who have vigorously tried to get references to God removed from our public emblems, pledges and currency, your passion has paid off.  Except that while we were distracted with the frontal assaults a more insidious strategy was occurring with greater effectiveness in turning our nation's eyes away from its Source of strength and honor.  "Let's give them stuff" has been a brilliant gameplan for diverting people away from their true Protector, Provider, Director and Disciplinarian.

Jesus Christ admonished the religious and political leaders of his day when he said, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign."  We are an evil and adulterous generation who seeks after security in the institutions of men.  Having become so blinded in our craving for stuff we accept the insanity of hopelessly incompetent (perhaps nefarious) men & women driving our country off a cliff into the sand heap of nation's before us who failed to heed the warning signs of ruin and decay!

What is the answer?  Vote out the old, vote in the new?  Though that is the time-tested democratic way provided for in the U.S. Constitution, the problem is that we will continue to put old wine (corrupted motives)  into new wineskins (hope for change).  Our momentary confidence in a victorious voting cycle will burst out once again in disappointment, or worse, the continuing dissolution of this great union.

The True Answer is REPENTANCE.  Although the concept has all but been lost in tossing out references to God, it is still not difficult to grasp: it is a turning away from wrong-doing.  Not difficult to understand, but very difficult to do when we've become insulated from the need for God in our everyday affairs and more dependent on what government can provide.  Repentance recognizes that the way we are traveling is heading toward an inglorious end and compels our will to turn around and find the right way!

If we truly Trust In God (as our currency still reminds us) then let us put that faith to the test by turning away from all that is immoral and ignorant for only a moral and educated people can rule themselves!

It is immoral to love things and use people.
It is ignorant to think we will not reap what we sow.

It is immoral to envy and covet other's possessions.
It is ignorant to think prosperity comes from coercive government taking property from one person and giving it to another.

It is immoral to have sexual relations with someone who is not your spouse.
It is ignorant to think that bad behavior results in good consequences.

It is immoral for any government to institute policies that tear down the foundation of family.
It is ignorant to not know that the core unit which determines the strength of any society is the family.

It is immoral to lie.
It is ignorant to live a lie.

It is immoral to not reward productive work.
It is ignorant to think people are motivated by anything but great reward for great effort.

It is immoral to not punish unrepentant bad behavior (justice).
It is ignorant to dismiss words of wisdom.

It is immoral to not forgive repentant good behavior (merciful).
It is ignorant to not understand that neither justice nor mercy exist without the other.

It is immoral to be slothful, irresponsible, and refuse to work for your own needs.
It is ignorant to believe your life will improve at the hand of "well-intentioned benefactors" doling out free stuff.

It is immoral to not be personally responsible for your own behavior.
It is ignorant to believe you cannot improve yourself.

It is immoral to turn our hearts and hands away from the truly needy.
It is ignorant to think someone else will help, or the government will fix it.

It is immoral to worship the idols of success and status.
It is ignorant to think we won't become like the things we worship.

It is immoral to not actively hold your leaders accountable.
It is ignorant to believe they are not tempted to use whatever means--moral or immoral--to stay in power.

When we turn and begin to quarrel with the immoral and ignorant in our own house, the God in whom we trust will be ready to send all the resources necessary to restore us!  After all, he who did not spare his own son, how will he not freely give us all things for life and godliness that we might continue on the road of our "manifest destiny": to be salt and light to the entire human race!

Patience, Mercy, Forgiveness.4

"Do not limit your attitude of forgiveness.
Are you willing to forgive seven times?
Seventy times seven times is more appropriate."

 --Jesus

What if:

image from npr.org
  • their indifference costs you sorrow
  • their slander costs you friends
  • their thievery costs you setbacks
  • their cruelty costs you fear
  • their selfishness costs you want
  • their abuse costs you wounded-ness
  • their hypocrisy costs you confusion
  • their deception costs you enlightenment
  • their sloppiness costs you injury
  • their broken promise costs you trust
  • their arrogance costs you humiliation
  • their distraction costs you a life
  • their disloyalty costs you defeat
  • their ignorance costs you understanding
  • their lying costs you justice
  • their coveting costs you property
  • their beatings costs you scars
  • their impurity costs you innocence
  • their malice costs you peace
  • their adultery costs you intimacy
  • their thoughtlessness costs you grief
  • their nonforgiving-ness costs you friendship
...will you forgive?

Forgiveness is the intersection between Man's Will and God's Power to help, heal and save!

Is this not the Divine Idea of Forgiveness:

“He has wronged me grievously. It is a dreadful thing to me, and more dreadful still to him, that he should have done it.
He has hurt me, but he has nearly killed himself. He shall have no more injury from it that I can save him.
I cannot feel the same towards him yet; but I will try to make him acknowledge the wrong he has done me, and so put it away from him. Then, perhaps, I shall be able to feel towards him as I used to feel.
For this end I will show him all the kindness I can, not forcing it upon him, but seizing every fit opportunity; not, I hope, from a wish to make myself great through bounty to him, but because I love him so much that I want to love him more in reconciling him to his true self.
I would destroy this evil deed that has come between us. I send it away. And I would have him destroy it from between us too, by abjuring it utterly.”
Think of forgiveness, then, like this:The perfecting of a work ever going on, namely the contact of God's heart and ours, ours and our offenders. In spite of the offense and toward its destruction, God's love is ever in front of his forgiveness. His love is perfect and being perfected in us, working out the forgiveness, because God loves where He cannot yet forgive, where no contact of hearts is possible because the intervening wrong has not yet begun to yield to His holy destructive fire!

But yield it will. Of that we may be sure!"

Until we should feel that the highest prize worth receiving is the heart of a repentant brother or sister, we have more to learn about His great heart! Let us press on to know Him!

(adapted from MacDonald, It Shall Not Be Forgiven, Unspoken Sermons I, emphasis added)
